Lee Konitz, Dan Tepfer, Michael Janisch, Jeff Williams: First Meeting
L'occasione è un doppio concerto londinese del maggio 2010 (il CD reca il sottotitolo Live in London Volume 1, il che ci fa pensare che ne sia previsto un seguito), popolato di standard (ma non manca l'amatissimo "Subconscious Lee") sui quali Konitz si muove con la consueta maestria (che non vuol dire mai —o almeno mai dovrebbe dire—mera padronanza tecnica), adeguatamente supportato dai tre partner, che hanno anche eloquenti enunciazioni personali, variando qua e là la conformazione dell'organico, che non disdegna il duetto ("Body & Soul," "Sweet & Lovely," semplice frammento) e il trio ("All the Things You Are, "Giant Steps").
Le cose migliori sembrano arrivare dagli iniziali "Billie's Bounce" e "All the Things You Are," probabilmente lo standard più amato dal vecchio Lee, che qui lo cavalca al soprano, con prologo solitario di taglio a tratti quasi lacyano, e a seguire sfoggiando la consueta, impagabile souplesse, quel suo caratteristico star dentro e simultaneamente sopra il tempo. Senza dimenticare almeno ancora "Alone Together," con ampio prologo contrabbassistico, e—ovviamente, verrebbe da dire—"Subconscious Lee," il primo al soprano, il secondo all'alto.
Tutto sempre tassativamente griffato LK. Che rimane sempre tutto fuor che poco. Alla prossima (speriamo).
