Tornato negli anni più recenti all'attenzione di critica e pubblico, in particolare grazie alla collaborazione con il musicista elettronico Kieran Hebden [Fourtet] [leggi la recensione di The Exchange Sessions Voll. 1 & 2], l'ormai sessantenne batterista Steve Reid ha un rapporto speciale con l'Africa. Dopo avere debuttato giovanissimo dietro i tamburi di Martha & The Vandellas - e con una carriera che spazia da Sun Ra al Miles Davis di Tutu, passando per Chaka Khan e Archie Shepp - il musicista del Bronx ha infatti anche suonato accanto a Fela Kuti a Lagos o con il pianista Randy Weston in Marocco e sceglie ora il Senegal come terreno per il nuovo disco Daxaar.

Quasi a propiziare questo ritorno, in apertura di disco è posto un delizioso brano per sola voce e kora, ma il clima ritmico si scalda presto, trascinando l'ascoltatore in un magma di suoni afro-fusion che si muovono più dalle parti del Miles Davis elettrico che non da quelle dei conturbanti duetti con Hebden.

Complessivamente il disco risulta così un po' deludente, vuoi per l'apporto banale delle tastiere, vuoi per l'esilità di alcune idee tematiche ["Jiggy Jiggy" sembra cosetta da riscaldamento pre-jam session], frustrando le potenziali scintille che il confricare di Africa, jazz e elettronica sanno produrre. Reid suona sempre bene, ma Hebden sembra a tratti sacrificato dalla necessità di rimanere dentro un tunnel modale senza troppi svincoli.

Le cose si risollevano un po' alla fine, con la convincente "Don't Look Back" che incomincia a sbrindellare a dovere la crosta sonora, ma il disco non bissa le grandi emozioni dei volumi in duo e conferma il detto - vero anche per i grandi musicisti - che meno è meglio. Peccato.
