Darius Jones, Thumbscrew, Oaagaada & Kira Kira

Click the play button to listen

These two hours are filled with amazing music. Alto saxophonist Darius Jones continues his Man'ish Boy series with his new Legend of E-Boi (The Hypervigilant Eye). I'll be amazed if this doesn't show up on most best-of lists for 2024. It's Darius in his finest form. Thumbscrew's work is impeccable too, and their new Wingbeats continues the trio's run of brilliant releases—they're simply one of the finest trios. The Finnish Quartet, Oaagaada, finally solves the mystery of what this band's debut album would sound like. After two just two or three singles on various compilations and a couple of festival appearances, the band proves that the wait was most definitely worth it—great Nordic free jazz. Pianist Eva Novoa changes things up on her latest trio recording, Novoa, Carter, Mela Volume 1; after two excellent piano trio sets, she drops the bass and brings in the reeds and trumpet of Daniel Carter. Kira Kira—the Japanese/Australian quartet with Satoko Fujii, Alister Spence and Natsuki Tamura—have released their second album and their legend grows, while legendary Italian saxophonist Tino Tracanna makes a welcome appearance on Spiritus Spiritus from drummer Francesco D’Auria. And I can't forget Russian transplant saxophonist Yaroslav Likhachev's new Chromatic Times; he scaled down his Cologne-based quartet to a trio and the result sizzles. Hey, this whole show sizzles!
