Eddie Mendenhall: Cosine Meets Tangent

Per il suo debutto da leader, il giovane pianista Eddie Mendenhall ha scelto di avvalersi dell'esperienza di Mark Sherman, e di realizzare insieme al vibrafonista una prima linea espressiva basata su molti scambi melodici e reciproci momenti di primo piano.

Cosine Meets Tangent propone una scaletta quasi esclusivamente basata su originali, nei quali si rintraccia la stoffa compositiva di Mendenhall, in uno stile versato al mainstream, ora molto ordinato e dai toni raffinati, come in "Spring Waltz," poi leggermente più speziato e dai sapori meno tenui, come quelli contenuti in "Rain Hike," o pronto nel ribadire la sua pregevolezza anche nei tempi più tirati, come nell'opener "Protocol" e in "Rin Ki Ou Hen". In programma troviamo lo standard "So Easy to Remember," con il vibrafono di Sherman in grande risalto, e un brano firmato proprio da quest'ultimo, quel "The Great Triplet" che - a conti fatti - risulta essere uno dei momenti più spensierati e frizzanti in un contesto generale molto pensoso e garbato.

Mendenhall segna dunque in maniera positiva il suo primo album, grazie a un impostazione pianistica di spessore, in grado sia di dialogare in maniera propositiva con gli altri strumenti che di prendere in mano la situazione in modo autonomo, come accade nella splendida "Lament for the Ocean".
