John Stevens - Evan Parker: Corner to Corner + The Longest Night

Nuova edizione per due pietre miliari della collaborazione tra John Stevens e Evan Parker, registrate a 17 anni di distanza.

The Longest Night era uscita a suo tempo in due vinili, considerato un vertice della musica estrema dell’epoca (era il 1976). Corner to Corner è invece del 1993 e precede dunque di poco la scomparsa del batterista.

John Stevens è stato tra i primi a praticare in Gran Bretagna l’improvvisazione assoluta, ed oltre ad essere un importante strumentista ha svolto un essenziale ruolo di catalizzatore sonoro e di didatta.

Il sodalizio con Parker è di quelli granitici: tante sedute, infinite esibizioni dal vivo. Dunque nessun problema di condivisione programmatica né tanto meno di intesa linguistica.

Ascoltando il duo, ogni parametro estetico dev’essere accantonato, accettando una sfida di radicale “tabula rasa” che, affrontata oggi, non appare più così interessante come allora.

Intendiamoci: le conversazioni tra percussioni e sax soprano mantengono tutto il loro valore. E’ il metodo del radicalismo preventivo ad essere oggi uno tra i molti possibili, non certo l’unica opzione, come invece pensava Derek Bailey.

Ascoltando specie The Longest Night si ha la sensazione che davvero nulla nella storia della musica abbia lasciato una traccia in Stevens e Parker.

Forse non è così, ma la percezione è quella. Allora, un linguaggio che reinventa un alfabeto, ma che non lo cristallizza, lasciandolo scorrere come un tessuto sfrangiato.

Il problema è la ripetizione del modulo. Per quanto tu voglia negare uno schema, esso ricompare a dispetto del presunto affrancamento raggiunto.

Delle sette tracce della seduta, anche seguendone solo due si carpiscono sufficienti informazioni.

Poi è la ridondanza a prevalere.

Stevens propone un percussionismo frammentario, un po’ primitivo.

Parker, allora fedele al solo sax soprano, è nel pieno di una creatività inafferrabile, perfezionata, lo sappiamo, fino ad oggi.

Ma se vogliamo godere di più, in termini di spettacolarità strumentale, preferiamo i dialoghi del secondo CD, più maturi in un certo senso.

Resta la convinzione che la musica radicale europea, recidendo più in profondità le radici rispetto a quella afroamericana, abbia esaurito in altri decenni le sue innovazioni e che la sua pur coraggiosa proposta si sia risolta in un affascinante circolo vizioso (o virtuoso, a seconda dei punti di vista).
