Eleni Karaindrou: Concert in Athens

Il concerto ateniese del Novembre 2010 che costituisce il nuovo CD della compositrice e pianista greca Eleni Karaindrou è caratterizzato dalla riunione con il sassofonista Jan Garbarek, che aveva prestato il timbro del suo strumento a due delle prime colonne sonore realizzate dalla Karaindrou per il regista Theo Angelopoulos, "Il volo" e "Paesaggio nella nebbia" (rispettivamente "The Beekeeper" e "Landscape in the Mist"), e pubblicate in Music for Films, suo lavoro d'esordio per la ECM. Inoltre, è presente come solista ospite anche la violista Kim Kashkashian, protagonista di un'altra colonna sonora successiva, quella di Ulysses' Gaze. Entrambi i musicisti erano stati suggeriti alla compositrice dal produttore Manfred Eicher, con una delle sue numerose intuizioni musicali vincenti, e avevano marcato indelebilmente i lavori cui avevano partecipato.

A differenza dell'imponente concerto di 5 anni prima documentato sul CD Elegy of the Uprooting, che aveva visto la riproposizione di molti dei temi composti per i film di Angelopoulos ed altri registi rimontati in una suite eseguita da un'orchestra e coro di oltre 100 elementi complessivi, qui la dimensione è molto più raccolta, e gran parte del programma comprende nuove composizioni, affidate a un'orchestra da camera e a un gruppetto di solisti in varie combinazioni strumentali.

Sono presenti i temi già noti di sei delle colonne sonore tra quelle da lei realizzate, cui si aggiungono alcuni lavori inediti per il teatro e la televisione, e alcune composizioni autonome. Nonostante l'apparente frammentazione (19 titoli in totale, quasi tutti al di sotto dei 4 minuti) la musica mantiene una sua coerenza e unitarietà grazie ai toni elegiaci ed evocativi dati dalla scrittura dell'autrice. Spiccano in particolare i brani dove sono presenti i due ospiti illustri, protagonisti anche di alcune delle nuove composizioni ("Closed Road," per viola e orchestra d'archi, "Invocation," "Tom's Theme" e "Adagio for Saxophone" per sassofono e orchestra d'archi, 'After Memory" per viola, sax tenore e oboe). Tra ì solisti, Garbarek fa la parte del leone; a lui sono affidati molti dei momenti più suggestivi di tutto l'album, come oltre ai brani citati anche il bel tema che apre e chiude il disco, "Requiem for Willy Loman."

La musica della Karaindrou mantiene sempre una propria spiccata identità, anche senza il supporto delle immagini o delle situazioni sceniche che dovrebbero accompagnare. Profondamente radicata nella tradizione musicale del folklore mediterraneo, riesce a nobilitare la sua origine popolare negli arrangiamenti cameristici che sottolineano la bellezza e la immediatezza delle melodie, semplici ma intense. Questo lavoro si aggiunge più che degnamente alla sua discografia per la ECM, arrivata al nono titolo.
