Viktor Toth: Climbing With Mountains
Sponsorizzato da William Parker (sue le note di copertina) e sostenuto dal drumming poderoso e fantasioso di un altro grande musicista afroamericano quale Hamid Drake, il sassofonista Viktor Toth si rivela musicista atipico. Perché se da una parte vanta studi e frequentazioni accademiche jazzistiche, come avviene di frequente presso le nuove generazioni, dall’altra possiede una formazione old style, maturata sul campo, facendo gavetta nei piccoli club e suonando anche in band dei circuiti pop e rock.
Così in Climbing with Mountains ritroviamo la lezione di Ornette Coleman, omaggiato attraverso il titolo di un brano, quella di Coltrane, citato con alcuni frammenti di "A Love Supreme", l’afflato panetnico di Don Cherry, palpabile nelle tracce a tempo lento, le contaminazioni con ritmi e melodie balcaniche, un pizzico di poetry, qualche accenno ai ritmi binari.
Il debutto da leader di Viktor Toth possiede energia e passionalità, si presenta con una indovinata alternanza di situazioni ritmiche, mette in mostra musicisti con una padronanza strumentale invidiabile ma alla fine sembra mancare di una significativa rielaborazione personale.
