Lee Morgan: City Lights
Due sono le novità per questa quarta incisione (1957) morganiana per la label statunitense: l’allargamento della front-line da due a tre strumenti e una maggior varietà della tesatura sonora, offerta dalle composizioni e dagli arrangiamenti di Benny Golson.
Pur non presentando elementi di novità rispetto alle strategie musicali del primo periodo Blue Note del trombettista, è questo un disco assai avvincente, che riassume la quintessenza dell’hard-bop di quegli anni. Con ritmi energici e sostenuti, stemperati dalla ricercatezza armonica che caratterizza le eteree composizioni di Benny Golson, co-leader nell’ombra di questo progetto.
Ma con un leader in piena forma, capace di imprimere il proprio passo e la propria prorompente vitalità, per scomporre le composizioni originali di Golson in infinite digradazioni istantanee. E poi ci sono le prolungate linee melodiche nel dilatare lo spazio circoscritto, insieme alla sua proverbiale scioltezza di fraseggio nel dominare i vari registri dello strumento.
Ed in più un costrutto sonoro che pare incarnare la quintessenza dell’estetica hardpoppistica: incisività ritmica, trascinanti chase dei fiati; verve comunicativa; dinamico interplay. Una musica che scorre fluida e lineare, tra avvincenti soluzioni hard-boppistiche, aromi bluesy e funky.
E per quanti amano questo stile del jazz, è un disco che non deluderà certo le loro attese, per riassaporare tutto il fascino di uno dei grandi maestri della tromba jazz.
