Quest: Circular Dreaming

Tra i tanti (troppi?) tributi, omaggi e onori al genio di Miles Davis, questo firmato dai Quest del sassofonista Dave Liebman, è certamente uno dei più riusciti nel cogliere lo spirito visionario e creativo di un genio assoluto e tradurlo secondo canoni che ne esaltano virtù e prospettive. Come ricorda nelle note di copertina il pianista Richie Beirach (fondatore insieme a Liebman dei Quest nel 1981): "Negli anni Sessanta e Settanta oggi giovane membro dei Quest aveva suonato con Davis o, come il sottoscritto, è andato numerose volte ai concerti dei suoi gruppi. Tra questi c'era il primo quintetto con Coltrane e il gruppo la cui musica costituisce il nucleo di questa registrazione, il secondo quintetto".

Si tratta della formazione, notissima agli appassionati, che nel 1964 vede l'ingresso di Wayne Shorter (proveniente allora dalle file del gruppo di Art Blakey): un evento che darà vita a una lunga e storica collaborazione a fianco del leader che si protrarrà fino al 1970. E Circular Dreaming ruota appunto attorno al grandissimo contributo che Shorter offrì al "secondo quintetto" soprattutto in veste di compositore. Non un compositore qualsiasi. Anzi, come puntualizza Beirach nelle note, il compositore jazz per antonomasia o meglio: "THE jazz composer".

E, dunque, ecco riaffiorare capolavori come "Prince of Darkness," "Footprints," "Nefertiti" o "Paraphernalia" riarrangiati con rispetto e grazia da un quartetto (Liebman e Beirach sono affiancati da Ron McLure al contrabbasso e da Billy Hart alla batteria) che sa andare ben oltre il manierismo con una combinazione perfetta tra sound (di una lucentezza smeraldina) e swing. Chiudono il cerchio due composizioni originali, rispettivamente di Liebman e di Beirach, e "Hand Jive" di Tony Willliams.
