Geir Hjorthol

Geir Hjorthol was born on September 12, 1952 in Sykkylven, Norway. He started to play the trumpet in a marching band at the age of 14, but it took a few years before he started to work seriously with music – along with his academic career as a teacher and researcher of nordic literature. As a trumpet player Geir combines the sound of the trumpet with alternative playing techniques and electronic sound processing. His free improvised music is inspired by folk music and contemporary, free tonal music. The sounds of Geir’s music come not only from acoustic instruments, electronic effects and the human voice, but from nature and everyday life

Two Aspects of Dave Liebman

Read "Two Aspects of Dave Liebman" reviewed by Jeff Dayton-Johnson

Records on which the prolific saxophonist David Liebman appears, not counting those under his own leadership, could constitute an entire jazz sub-genre on their own. So the two records reviewed here are part of a crowded field. And although Liebman's presence is the common denominator, it is more than a little unfair to the leaders ...

Quest: Re-Dial: Live in Hamburg

Read "Re-Dial: Live in Hamburg" reviewed by John Kelman

The new millennium seems to be a time when groups are reuniting, sometimes to even greater acclaim than they achieved the first time around. It's also a time when aging jazz musicians are lighting a fire under their own careers, ramping up their output and broadening their reach. Saxophonist Dave Liebman's activity in the past year ...

QuestSearching for the New Sound of Be-BopStoryville Records2010 There are groups that become legends in their own time and others that only gain momentum after that time has come and gone.
