Kirk Knuffke - Lisle Ellis - Kenny Wollesen: Chew Your Food

Ancora un trio, ancora un album splendido per il giovane trombettista e compositore Kirk Knuffke. Se in Amnesia Brown insieme al fido Kenny Wollesen si era assicurato i doppi servigi di Doug Wieselman al clarinetto e chitarra, in Chew Your Food è lo storico bassista canadese Lisle Ellis a completare il trio. E laddove il sunnominato album per Clean Feed aveva tra le carte vincenti l'idea di frazionare l'album in ben sedici brani secchi ed essenziali, in questo lavoro per la NoBusiness Records (l'etichetta lituana che si sta sempre più confermando spia sensibile delle nuove tendenze nel campo dell'improvvisazione) è l'ampio respiro a caratterizzare l'incisione.

Le nove composizioni scivolano una nell'altra attraverso uno sviluppo in forma di suite con movimenti fluidi e sinuosi e ci si trova trasportati da correnti calde e confortevoli da una musica difficile da definire. Volendo in qualche modo crearne un'immagine potrebbe essere quella di un Chet Baker che sposa il free, flirta con l'avanguardia, fatica a resistere alle sirene del cool e non dimentica il primo amore, ossia il bop.

La tromba di Knuffke possiede un tono caldo e confortevole, a volte delicato e apparentemente fragile, altre possente e vigoroso, sempre attento a non sprecare note ed a evitare ridondanze. Il fraseggio segue traiettorie imprevedibili, individua prospettive inusuali, usa spazi e pause in maniera poco convenzionale pur restando ancorato ad un senso melodico innato.

Vi è qualcosa di romantico e di veramente emozionante in tutto questo con i tre musicisti che riescono a suonare in maniera profonda e delicata, morbida e avventurosa, grazie ad una capacità di reciproco ascolto sorprendente. Registrato dal vivo nel 2009 al Roulette di Brooklyn grazie ad un premio per compositori della Jerome Foundation assegnato a Knuffke, Chew Your Food è un grande esempio di jazz ispirato, creativo e altamente comunicativo.
