Mike Moreno: Between the Lines
Il chitarrista di Houston è qui al suo primo album da leader e, affiancato da un solido quartetto, fornisce una buona prova d'esordio. Non particolarmente coraggiosa o innovativa, ma ricca di spunti interessanti, soprattutto dal punto di vista melodico.
Il suono della sua chitarra è schiettamente jazzistico, così come il suo fraseggio (più all'elettrica che all'acustica). Le sue composizioni hanno linee melodiche ampie, che si sviluppano a lungo all'interno del brano, e seppur complesse godono di buona orecchiabilità ed immediatezza.
Per certi versi viene in mente Pat Metheny, sicuramente una delle voci di riferimento di Moreno a livello esecutivo, compositivo, e di sound complessivo dell'organico. Rispetto a Metheny, tuttavia, Moreno ha una vena decisamente più inserita nel mainstream del jazz ed ha un linguaggio molto più sobrio, asciutto e privo di ogni spettacolarizzazione fine a se stessa.
