Angélique Kidjo: Voodoo Child (Slight Return)

Ian Patterson By Ian Patterson

Hollywood has come late to the party. Pretty much the whole world knew that Angélique Kidjo is a major star, decades before the Beninese singer was honored with a place on Hollywood's Walk of Fame in August 2026. At least Kidjo got to enjoy the hoopla while still alive and kicking. Jimi Hendrix only got his star on the Walk of Fame more than two decades after his death.

Kidjo has long expressed her admiration for Hendrix, describing him as the most important figure in the history of rock 'n' roll and a gateway to her understanding of the complex relationship between Africa and America.

She recorded Hendrix's "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" on her album Oremi (Island Records, 1998). But this incendiary version, recorded live in an Australian television studio, captures the singer in all her glory. A veritable force of nature, Kidjo is the voodoo child of Miriam Makeba, Bella Bellow, Celia Cruz, Aretha Franklin... and Jimi Hendrix.
