The 53-track selection starts with Billie Holiday and Alberta Hunter, goes ahead with Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday, and ends with Flora Purim and Ithamara Koorax, the only two Brazilian singers included in this collection. Among the original track producers are Norman Granz, Orrin Keepnews and Arnaldo DeSouteiro.
An excerpt from the liner notes, written by Philippe Blanchet, and translated to English by Sandy Scott:
"The breakdown of boundaries between different musical genres at the turn of the last century, modified the rules of jazz. Open to influences of all kinds, jazz has welcomed music from the world over, enriching itself with new color, seeking out new ideas. Once again the female vocalists are leading protagonists of this metamorphosis. Some, like the Canadian Barbara Lewis, are exploring paths to a "new world fusion". Others, following in Flora Purim's footsteps, like the young Brazilian Ithamara Koorax, blend samba-infused jazz with the electronic clicks of frenetic drum & bass. The tempo is changing. The instruments change too, sometimes. But the voice, the voice of the diva which instills jazz with a vital charge of "soul", seems more indispensable than ever... Born in Rio to Polish parents, Ithamara Koorax, began her career at an early age, working as a backing vocalist for various Brazilian pop stars and recording many songs for television series. Strongly influenced by Flora Purim, this virtuoso singer, widely considered to be one of the most accomplished of her generation, turned her attention to jazz, which she felt free to color with samba, acid jazz or even drum & bass, and achieved stardom in USA, Europe and Japan."
