Pressoché sconosciuto dalle nostre parti, il poco più che trentenne Phillip Golub è musicista assai attivo nella sempre effervescente scena newyorchese. Eclettico, trasversale, dalla curiosità onnivora si muove con disinvoltura tra jazz, intrighi elettronici, libera improvvisazione e musica da camera, come testimoniano dischi e concerti.

Per Abiding Memory si è scomodato un gigante del pianoforte come Vijay Iyer, scrivendone assai lusinghiere note di copertina. E l'ascolto delle dieci tracce conferma appieno l'eccellenza del risultato, perché Abiding Memory è un debutto da leader di grande impatto.

Musica fuori dal comune, concettualmente aperta, libera da costrizioni ma genialmente organizzata, dall'impianto sonoro insolito, dal flusso denso e magmatico ma cristallino nella percezione, con un finale aperto che lascia all'ascoltatore il piacere della chiusura. Basta immergersi nell'ascolto dell'iniziale "Catching a Thread" per capire che questa musica possiede qualcosa di speciale. Una prova d'orchestra dove gli strumenti sembrano accordarsi ciascuno in una propria direzione estetica e sonora salvo poi magicamente ricomporsi in un unicum di matrice orchestrale che lascia senza fiato.

Abiding Memory ha una scrittura complessa e sofisticata veicolata con grande leggerezza, una sorta di suite formata da quadri sonori mutevoli, che ibridano libera improvvisazione e momenti cameristici, groove ipnotici con stralunati sviluppi timbrici, sequenze metafisiche con le sonorità elettriche di chitarra e Fender Rhodes. Il tutto con la regia illuminata di Golub, il cui originale incedere pianistico (ascoltare il lungo incipit dell'ultimo brano) funge sia da collante che da stimolo, dove il connubio chitarra elettrica/violoncello definisce le coordinate entro le quali si muove la musica che mostra un peso specifico davvero inusuale per un album di debutto.
