Marty Ehrlich Large Ensemble: A Trumpet in the Morning

Ricercatore instancabile, Marty Ehrlich torna dopo 13 anni con un progetto per big band, firmando uno dei dischi più belli del 2013. Rara avis, il lavoro di arrangiamento si distingue per una idea di jazz magnificamente svincolato da regole e formulette. Prevale una pratica musicale estremamente volatile, che anche all'interno di un solo episodio cambia continuamente forma e soluzioni, giocando mimeticamente con più stili. Le composizioni si impongono per l'obliquità ruvida del tessuto sonoro, con masse sonore graffianti, in continuo attrito.

Sulla scorta dell'insegnamento di Julius Hemphill e Muhal Richard Abrams, ogni tassello ha una sua autonoma valenza grazie ad un diverso approccio all'orchestrazione. La struttura piramidale con sezioni contrastanti di ascendenza mingusiana domina l'andamento di "M Variations," qui riarrangiato come concerto per pianoforte. Altrove, le partiture assumono i contorni di grandiosi affreschi orchestrali dove a turno le varie sezioni ricorrono all'improvvisazione come potente mezzo di riscrittura.

Dall'omaggio al delta blues alle combinazioni free, la musica più visceralmente soulful si incontra con quella più astratta in una magica collisione fra opposti. Grazie anche ad una big band da sogno, il magistrale lavoro di scrittura ed arrangiamento del leader viene esaltato dal fervido contributo delle varie—e tutte personali—voci strumentali.

Opere come queste vanno amate e sostenute sia dal pubblico che dagli addetti ai lavori, in quanto sono destinate a restare negli annali del jazz.
