Paolo Faga: Without Name

Non lasciatevi ingannare dal falso indizio che il trombettista calabrese Paolo Faga pone all'inizio del suo album Without Name. Lo spirito davisiano che pervade tutto l'album è certamente più quello di "Flamenco Sketches," "Seven Steps to Heaven" e dell'hard bop piuttosto che quello di "Tutu" e della svolta elettrica.

Questa musica prevalentemente acustica risulta essere elegante e un po' fuori contesto allo stesso tempo. Come se la rivoluzione che si manifestò nella seconda metà degli anni sessanta fosse stata una sorta di incidente di percorso e non il vero passaggio epocale dei tempi moderni.

In questo album il quartetto di Paolo Faga è irrobustito dall'ingresso come ospite del sax di Flavio Nicotera, un altro calabrese solido ed essenziale, con una sua centralità che serve come punto fermo attorno al quale ruotano le cose.

Sorvolando sull'imbarazzante anglicismo del titolo "Free (t)to mist," arriviamo al termine di questo lavoro con la sensazione che la tromba di Faga sia ancora alla ricerca di una sua precisa cifra stilistica, forse proprio a causa della sua voglia di guardare avanti voltandosi all'indietro.
