John Fedchock New York Big Band: Up & Running
Tra questi appaiono in bella evidenza il baritonista Gary Smulyan, che sostiene con suono robusto e fraseggio agile la celeberrima “Alfie’s Theme“, il trombettista Scott Wendholt, brillante interprete dell’iniziale “Up & Running“, e Rick Margitza, a proprio agio con il sax tenore nelle trame dense e intriganti di “Elvin’s Empire“.
Non vi è nulla di sconvolgente in Up & Running, il tutto suona molto classico, nell’accezione più nobile del termine, con grandi masse sonore che si muovono agili e possenti, musicisti impeccabili, lo swing pulsante che la fa da padrone, e arrangiamenti pertinenti e accurati.
Fa eccezione la non proprio indovinata versione della coltraniana “Moment’s Notice“ che, costruita su ritmi latineggianti, viene a perdere gran parte della propria tensione narrativa in favore di una ballabilità un poco fuori luogo. Mentre la conclusiva “Mr. Dudley“, caratterizzata da un andamento più articolato, da sonorità contemporanee e da un gustoso intreccio tra il clarone dolphyano di Charles Pillow e il trombone anni venti di Keith O’Quinn, saluta l’ascoltatore con un’imprevista ventata di modernità.
