Kihnoua: Unauthorized Caprices

Il progetto Kihnoua di Larry Ochs, che esordisce in questo disco, è improntato alla radicale sperimentazione di elementi vocali e strumentali, sia acustici che elettronici che si fondono e interagiscono in un intenso abbraccio. L'organico di base è il trio, costituito dal sassofonista del Rova, dalla cantante coreana Dohee Lee e del batterista Scott Amendola a cui si aggiungono in questa stessa incisione o in concerto altri musicisti (Zeena Parkins, Fred Frith, Carla Kihlstedt e altri).

La presenza della vocalist è centrale: le forme del canto tradizionale coreano p'ansori, caratterizzato da suoni gutturali e articolazioni vocali ardite, si relaziona con le libere improvvisazioni di Ochs e il tumultuoso drumming di Amendola. Nei vari brani, si aggiungono Liz Allbee, la chitarra di Fred Frith o il violoncello di Joan Jeanrenaud.

Ciò che risulta è una musica intransigente, che spesso ha la radicalità del free storico ma sa esplorare territori diversi: da libere astrazioni a sperimentazioni rumoristiche, fino a momenti straordinariamente solenni (come in "Less Than a Wind," con Joan Jeanrenaud protagonista). Il brano più significativo è il lungo e multiforme "Nothing Stopped But a Future" dove l'ensemble è al completo e mostra in pieno la sua ricca carica visionaria.
