Chris Potter Underground: Ultrahang
Un buon numero di album a proprio nome per etichette come Concord, Verve e Criss Cross ne avevano consolidato la fama di musicista guida nell'ambito di un jazz moderno, dalle salde radici mainstream. Forse per scuotersi di dosso questa etichetta un poco limitante, forse per reali esigenze espressive, Potter decise nel 2005 di allestire un band elettrica che lo portasse nei territori di confine tra jazz, rock, funky ed elettronica, debuttando con Underground a cui seguì il live Follow the Red Line: Live at the Village Vanguard fino ad arrivare a questo Ultrahang.
Che non è sconvolgente ma è un ottimo disco, potremmo definirlo un piccolo classico nel suo genere, per la misura e la precisione nella scrittura, per l'affiatamento tra i musicisti, per le esecuzioni impeccabili, per un suono riconoscibile ma cangiante. A parte l'intensa, commovente, versione della Dylaniana "It Ain't Me, Babe" e la conclusiva "Interstellar Signals," una ballata cosmica a tratti inquietante, Ultrahang non ha un attimo di respiro.
Merito delle metriche irregolari (M-Base e Steve Coleman insegnano) utilizzate da Nate Smith che compone e scompone tempi con grande maestria. Merito della chitarra di Adam Rogers sempre pertinente sia in fase di sostegno che in assoli ora carichi di blues feeling, ora secchi e acidi, ora dalla grana funky. Merito di Chris Potter rugoso il giusto al clarinetto basso, zigzagante, obliquo, dalla vena inesauribile al tenore e compositore raffinato. E nonostante sembri il più defilato tra i protagonisti dell'incisione, merito di Craig Taborn che dietro le quinte assolve a vitali funzioni di raccordo e fornisce essenziali coloriture timbriche, decisive nel determinare il suono complessivo del gruppo.
