Cato Salsa Experience & The Thing feat. Joe McPhee: Two Bands and a Legend
Una collaborazione nata al Festival di Kongsberg nel 2004 e testimoniata dall'EP Sounds Like a Sandwich, per poi approdare a questo primo lavoro sulla lunga distanza. Gli ingredienti, si può intuire, sono quelli: terribili sfuriate free-garage, un riappropriarsi quasi rituale di brani, umori, frammenti della storia sonora recente più indomabile.
Insieme a brani originali [di Mats Gustafsson il granitico "Teklo Loo"], gli otto diavoli si cimentano anche con classici del rock come "Louie Louie" [introdotta da un convulso duetto tra Gustafsson e McPhee], con una efficacissima versione di "Who the Fuck" di PJ Harvey, ma anche con quel vero e proprio inno alla conoscenza che è "You Ain't Gonna Know Me 'Cos You Think You Know Me", scritta dal trombettista Mongezi Feza e tra i brani più belli e coinvolgenti del repertorio dei jazzmen sudafricani che trovarono ospitalità in Inghilterra.
Dopo le urla demoniache, sentire il contrabbasso di Ingebrigt Haker Flaten scavare nel riff scuro del brano, raggiunto progressivamente dal sax tenore di Gustafsson e dal resto dei musicisti - con un McPhee di straziante lirismo alla pocket trumpet - è un momento di grande emozione.
Ma c'è ancora spazio per le bordate acide dell'organo di Bard Enerstad che introducono la corsa mozzafiato free di "The Nut" e per "Baby Talk" di James Blood Ulmer, altra vetta del disco prima della chiusura vagamente artsy di "I Can't Find My Mind". Un gran bel disco, per cuori solidi, e gustose le brevi e fulminanti note di Thurston Moore.
