Ideal Bread: Transmit - Vol. 2 of the Music of Steve Lacy

Un sax baritono, "tubo" intrinsecamente privo di quell'allusività, quella magica obliquità, che dimorano invece generose nelle pieghe della musica di Steve Lacy, sta al centro di questo nuovo omaggio del quartetto newyorchese al grande sopranista, di cui viene riletta una manciata di temi solo in parte fra i suoi più alti (mancano - anche dal precedente volume, del 2007 - autentiche icone quali "Bone," "Blinks," "The Crust," "Utah," "Deadline," tanto per fare qualche titolo, benché, come ogni selezione, anche questa vada assolutamente rispettata, per carità), e già in ciò risiede un chiaro segnale dell'aria che tira nel disco: un'aria tutto sommato poco lacyana, specie negli sviluppi improvvisativi (ma anche i temi in sé risultano in qualche modo linearizzati, "normalizzati").

Sia chiaro: il lavoro è del tutto apprezzabile, ma viene da pensare che dedicare un intero CD a un songbook fin troppo poco visitato (rispetto al suo valore) e allontanarsene poi così marcatamente rappresenti in qualche modo un'occasione almeno in parte mancata.

Si segnalano gli episodi più liberi, tipo "Flakes" e soprattutto "The Breath" (due delle scelte tematiche più felici: sarà un caso?), brano finalmente articolato che salvaguarda l'incedere di impronta monkiana propria di Lacy (e della sua scrittura), quieto e ondivago, con soprassalti e asperità magari olimpici ma palpabili disseminati qua e là. Altrove si respira un vento di post-molte-cose corretto ma un po' generico.
