Vijay Iyer with Prasanna & Nitin Mitta: Tirtha
La parola sanscrita Tirtha, che letteralmente indica il guado di un fiume, a livello traslato significa un luogo sacro in cui le preoccupazioni quotidiane vengono accantonate per raggiungere uno stato spirituale più profondo dell'essere. Nella musica del CD la componente indiana è rappresentata soprattutto dalle tabla di Mitta e dalle chitarre di Prasanna, che spesso assumono sonorità deformate ed elastiche mimando il tradizionale sitar. Il piano di Iyer incarna invece il versante più propriamente jazzistico, ma anche quello della musica classica europea. Si susseguono quindi scale, melodie, ritmi e sonorità di matrici diverse, fluidamente compenetrate, che materializzano un'ipnotica austerità e una sontuosa complessità di elaborazione, senza escludere sussulti eccentrici, divagazioni e a volte perfino un pizzico quasi impercettibile di divertita ironia.
In queste incisioni, effettuate in uno studio di Brooklyn nell'agosto 2008, la composizione di cinque brani spetta al pianista e quella dei rimanenti quattro al chitarrista: non si percepiscono tuttavia differenze sostanziali fra di loro. Prevalgono piuttosto sviluppi concatenati, di dialogante interplay in cui ognuno dei tre protagonisti ha modo di mettersi in evidenza. In definitiva, ci troviamo di fronte ad un prodotto abbastanza anomalo, maturo, più significativo e convincente di tanti altri, di quell'attualità interculturale, di cui l'etichetta tedesca è uno dei più attivi divulgatori.
