A tre anni da Glamoured, a tredici dal capolavoro Blue Light 'Til Down, Cassandra Wilson sembra aver definitivamente preso confidenza con la scrittura più che con la reinterpretazione originale di classici. Prodotto da T Bone Burnett, Thunderbird, è il disco della svolta dell'artista afroamericana nata a Jackson, Mississipi.

Un CD che riassume tutto il suo passato, aggiornandolo. L'artista scrive sei brani su dieci e a suo modo interpreta "Closer to You" di Jakob Dylan come se fosse un brano dei Massive Attack; "Easy Rider" di Blind Lemon Jefferson e "Red River Valley" di Willie Dixon che farebbero un figurone in un film di Wim Wenders.

"Go to Mexico" ha l'anima e la freschezza elettro - dance; "Poet" sembra annaspare in territori tiepidamente trip hop e mistici; "I Want to Be Loved" porta il blues a casa; "Lost" ammanta le tessiture di soffuse e magiche atmosfere jazz; "Strike a Match" è un seducente ostinato in 7/4; "Tarot" è un delicato quanto affabile episodio soul.

Le dà una mano, oltre a Burnett, Marc Ribot.

Thunderbird completa il già notevole tragitto stilistico della più bella voce afroamericana.
