Billy Fox: The Uncle Wiggly Suite

«It began with a dream» racconta il percussionista-compositore Billy Fox nelle note che accompagnano questo sorprendente esordio targato, ancora una volta, Clean Feed. Un sogno intravisto e catturato in quegli attimi senza tempo che separano il sonno dalla veglia, la coscienza dall’incoscienza. È in una zona non meglio precisata di quel confine assai labile che sono affiorate le linee guida di questa suite in dieci movimenti intitolata al coniglietto Uncle Wiggly, un personaggio famoso di libri per ragazzi.

Ce ne sarà voluta di fatica, comunque, per trasformare una confusa sequenza di illuminazioni oniriche in una serie di episodi rigidamente strutturati, squisitamente arrangiati ed impreziositi da un infinito catalogo di dettagli gustosi e raffinatezze armoniche. Già, perchè il fascino di quest’accattivante opera prima di uno che di mestiere fa l’eclettico (batterista punk e rockabilly, frequentatore dello speed metal, dell’hip-hop e del mambo. Vi basta?) risiede nella proteiforme capacità di scrivere e arrangiare con gusto, ispirazione, ed abilità non comune.

La facilità (e felicità) di commistione e sintesi dei più disparati linguaggi risulta piacevolmente spiazzante: si passa dalle atmosfere modali del jazz anni sessanta di “Uncle Wiggly” e “Eyeball Eyeball” (degne della penna di Oliver Nelson), alle suadenti suggestioni orientali dell’ipnotica “Guzzle”; dal coinvolgente incedere latino di “Do the Wiggle” (Fox non ha mai fatto mistero dell’ammirazione incondizionata per Tito Puente), al fascino cool della sognante “Kooky Spooks”.

Se a questo rutilante carosello di idee e colori si aggiunge una schiera di musicisti capaci e calati appieno nello spirito del progetto, ecco spiegato il perchè di un disco assolutamente riuscito. La formazione variabile (si va dal piano solo al sestetto) è composta in larga parte da giovani di belle speranze. Particolarmente convincenti il piano sornione di Deanna Witkowski e le ance camaleontiche di John Savage e Gary Pickard. Padrino d’eccezione Mark Dresser (ormai un frequentatore assiduo di casa Clean Feed), uno che non finisce mai di stupire per la maestria tecnica (da antologia l’intro della suggestiva “Guzzle”) e per la straordinaria disponibilità a lasciarsi coinvolgere.
