Franco D'Andrea Quartet: The Siena Concert

E' sempre un piacere ascoltare un CD di Franco D'Andrea. La sua musica, la conosciamo bene, è sempre densa e ricca di contenuti. E' sempre portatrice di un'idea. Musica essenziale, per così dire. Ogni nota al suo posto, con precisione chirurgica. Mai una nota superflua. L'arte della sottrazione al suo massimo grado, senza per questo diventare eterea vacuità come talvolta accade in certo jazz europeo. Ricerca dell'essenzialità e del senso della musica (che a volte può essere dunque ricca e piena!), non delle pause e dei vuoti.

In questo album troviamo D'Andrea alla testa del suo ottimo quartetto, in una registrazione dal vivo. Un CD che ci restituisce dunque la freschezza e l'immediatezza di un concerto, ed anche quelle libertà che in un album registrato in studio non sono solitamente permesse (chissà poi perché?). Ad esempio, la libertà di proporre sei lunghi medley. Sei lunghi brani, che si sviluppano secondo i tempi dettati della musica, e che esplorano, ciascuno a modo suo, un'ampia gamma di universi emozionali ed espressivi. Dalla libera improvvisazione più autentica, all'introspezione di un contrabbasso solo. Una panoramica a volo d'uccello su una buona parte della produzione del pianista meranese, con un occhio al maestro e riferimento di sempre (Thelonious Monk) ed un bellissimo omaggio a Charles Mingus.
