Prince Lasha & Odean Pope Trio: The Mystery of Prince Lasha

Si erano un po' perse le tracce di Prince Lasha, il versatile polistrumentista texano che molti ricorderanno a fianco di Sonny Simmons o Eric Dolphy, oltre che in un memorabile disco Impulse! a nome di Elvin Jones e Jimmy Garrison, Illumination!

Come ci spiegano diligentemente le note di copertina in questi anni il nostro è stato prevalentemente impegnato a guadagnarsi da vivere e ora, più vicino agli ottanta che ai settanta, si toglie la soddisfazione di tornare a incidere un disco, insieme al trio formato da Odean Pope al sax tenore, Tyrone Brown al contrabbasso e Craig McIver alla batteria.

The Mystery of Prince Lasha - il titolo si diverte un po' a giocare sulla lunga lontananza dalle scene - è un disco sincero e semplice, ricco di memoria e di spirito: si parte con un omaggio al concittadino Ornette Coleman nei suoi accenti più latini, per poi ricamare frasi dense sull'incedere circospetto di "Many, Many, Many, Many Miles Away".

Tutte le composizioni del disco, eccettuata "Prince Lasha" sono firmate dal polistrumentista [qui impegnato a clarinetto e flauto, oltre che riprendere il consueto timbro pungente al soprano e al contralto. Proprio il soprano intreccia con il tenore di Pope un nodo di linee struggenti in "Selmer", per poi ritornare a ritmi di derivazione africana in "Dinka Man Warrior".

I temi scorrono piacevoli, senza particolari picchi, ma con una tensione espressiva sempre viva: il vecchio compagno di avventure Dolphy è ricordato dal brano omonimo [in cui Lasha sceglie il flauto], non sono rari i toni pacati e apertamente spirituali, con Pope e la sezione ritmica che asseconda elegantemente il percorso del più anziano collega. Bentornato!
