Steven Feifke: The Generation Gap Jazz Orchestra
Metti assieme un talentoso giovane orchestratore come Steven Feifke, un trombettista di prima grandezza come Bijon Watson e una big band con grandi nomi e prestigiosi ospiti e il risultato è scontato.
Il debutto della Generation Gap Jazz Orchestra è stato propiziato dalla collaborazione col Jazz Education Network ed ha assunto le vesti di un album includendo in organico ospiti di rilievo come Kurt Elling, Sean Jones e Chad Lefkowitz-Brown.
Il principale riferimento è la tradizione orchestrale mainstream e la musica è un concentrato di swing, poderosi ensemble, squillanti polifonie, enfatizzanti riff e smaglianti assoli.
Ovviamente la lezione di Thad Jones/Mel Lewis è imprescindibile ma la scrittura di Feifke attualizza anche classici impasti di Benny Carter e altri orchestratori degli anni trenta/quaranta. Il tutto senza dimenticare la contemporaneità come dimostra la turbinosa versione di "Sassy," cantata da Elling con iniziali innesti rap.
Se "I've Got Algorithm" e "Inner Urge" si caratterizzano per elettrizzante carica ritmica, marcati contrasti timbrici e serrati scontri di sezione, altri brani hanno un andamento più disteso: si vedano "Until" la luminosa ballad in ¾ di Sting esaltata da Kurt Elling ed ancora la dolce "Remember Me," dov'è protagonista la calda tromba di Watson su ricercate armonizzazioni del collettivo.
Un album pienamente riuscito, tutto da godere.
