AA.VV.: The Breaks - 15th Anniversary Crystal Edition
Si incrociano perché di base The Breaks suona, seppur ottima, come una delle tante raccolte di soul, funk e R&B in circolazione, ma è anche un doppio nel cuore delle cui scelte ci sono i breaks di tanti classici del rap.
Grazie all'attenta selezione di Dean Rudland [esperto DJ e produttore dai tempi dell'etichetta Acid Jazz], troviamo così fianco a fianco Meters e Last Poets, Al Green e Funkadelic, ma anche Harold Melvin e The Mohawks, The Stylistics e MFSB, oltre a chicche meno note ma altrettanto stuzzicanti. Un pezzo del loro brano è stato poi il germe di un altro [nelle note di copertina ci sono buone indicazioni per rintracciarli e magari riscoprirli su YouTube] e riascoltarli quindi oggi rappresenta una sorta di palingenesi attraverso stratificazioni di stili e di senso.
Ecco quindi che da un frammento di "I'm So Glad You're Mine" di Al Green nasce "Mahogany" di Erik B & Rakim, così come da "Groovin'" dei Young Rascals sboccia "4th Chamber" di RZA e così via, in un alternarsi di languori philly e di ruvidezze funk in cui la nostalgia rischia comunque di farla da padrona, come è logico. Ma che nostalgia!
