Wolfgang Muthspiel: Angular Blues

Read "Angular Blues" reviewed by Mike Jurkovic

So much of Austrian guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel's music materializes before you like Mr. Spock and company on Star Trek. The music beamed in always airy and on the verge of evaporation. But before it does either manifest or vanish it leads you along a slippery slope, through brave structures where only the guitarist knows where the ...

Wolfgang Muthspiel: Continuing The Dream

Read "Wolfgang Muthspiel: Continuing The Dream" reviewed by R.J. DeLuke

Jazz has always traveled. It finds inquisitive musicians all over the globe, where often, people outside the U.S. receive the message more readily than those in the country where it was born. Austrian guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel was already improvising with his older brother, for fun, in the time leading up to his discovery of the art ...

Wolfgang Muthspiel: Angular Blues

Austrian jazz guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel's previous two ECM albums have been quintets: Where The River Goes (ECM, 2018) and Rising Grace (ECM, 2016). This trio date is a call back to his ECM leader debut, Driftwood (ECM, 2014), with Brian Blade returning on drums but Scott Colley replacing Larry Grenadier on double bass. The music is ...

Wolfgang Muthspiel: Angular Blues

Read "Angular Blues" reviewed by Dan Bilawsky

Guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel's fourth leader date for ECM Records--and his second trio outing for that storied imprint, following Driftwood (ECM Records, 2014)--is a marvel of ingenious interplay, musical sensitivity and absolute sincerity. Joining forces with drummer Brian Blade, a longtime band mate, and bassist Scott Colley, a playing partner from the '90s, Muthspiel delves into the ...

Musician

Wolfgang Muthspiel

Born:

Born in 1965, guitar player Wolfgang Muthspiel lives in Vienna. 30 CDs with mainly his own compositions document his work as bandleader and co-leader. Being trained as a classical musician he approaches the acoustic guitar with the same ease as improvisation and jazz.
His Mozart-loving father encouraged him to start with violin playing at age six. At the age 14, he switched to guitar and started to create his own music with his brother Christian. His interest for improvisation led on to jazz. He moved to Boston/Massachusetts and attended the Berklee College of Music on a full scholarship in 1986 where Mick Goodrick introduced him to complex harmonic worlds

Read "Blue Note 50ths, American Pianists Association Winners & More" reviewed by Marc Cohn

A light schedule of Blue Note 50th anniversaries this month: Hank Mobley's The Flip. But we missed a Thad Jones, Mel Lewis Orchestra recording (originally on Solid State but reissued on Blue Note) last month due to an error in our working discography. So, we feature album that as well. To celebrate Blue Note's 80th anniversary, ...

Wolfgang Muthspiel: Where The River Goes

Read "Where The River Goes" reviewed by Luigi Sforza

Larry Grenadier: The Gleaners

Read "The Gleaners" reviewed by Karl Ackermann

Bassist Larry Grenadier has a most impressive resume: multiple recordings with Herbie Mann, Paul Motian, Charles Lloyd, trumpeter/brother Phil Grenadier, vocalist/wife Rebecca Martin, Chris Potter, Joshua Redman, Jamie Saft, and many others. His brand has long been enhanced by his stellar work with Pat Metheny and a twenty-plus-year association with Brad Mehldau. It's not surprising that ...
