Born:

I began singing in the First Methodist church choir when I was ten years old. By the time I was eleven I was a featured soloist. My love of acting and singing lured me to New York City where I graduated from the prestigious American Academy of Dramatic Arts, and then went on to study Shakespeare with Phillip Burton. A few years later, while on tour performing in regional theaters throughout the United States, I began singing again. In 1989 I met my husband, jazz guitarist Dom Minasi. While maintaining a busy acting career,I appeared at the National Theatre in Washington, D.C. in "And WHEN SHE WAS BAD...." I was awarded an OOBR for my portrayal of Gloriana Powers in "CHAIN OF SUMMER VOICES." In 1989 I was featured in "FRANKIE & JOHNNY" opposite Tony Award-winner, Anthony Crivello, at the Milwaukee Rep., then on to the dual role of Lady Blues and Mrs

A QUICK HERSTORY: Belinda Underwood's first exposures to music occurred five nights a week while she was captive in her jazz-pianist-mother's womb. After a childhood of violin lessons, harp lessons, orchestras and choirs, music became her choice when she fell in love with the upright bass at age sixteen. In high school she traveled as a bass player (on scholarship) to Australia with the Monterey Jazz Festival Honor Band, and in college she played and traveled with the UC Berkeley Wednesday Band

About John Vance

Musician

John Vance

It could be said that there are two types of jazz singers. Some function as instrumentalists, using the melody and lyrics as mere points of departure before they create abstract improvisations. The other type are those who are storytellers, digging deep into the meaning of the words they sing, paying respect to the composers’ melodies while still making each song their own. John Vance falls into the latter category. Dreamsville features John’s interpretations of a dozen mostly vintage standards and “If You Go,” a haunting song that he co-wrote with pianist Jeff Colella. “It’s always a challenge when performing songs that have been around a long time, making them contemporary, fresh, and interesting, rather than rehashing someone else’s arrangement.” For this set, Vance is joined by Colella (who contributed the arrangements), bassist Trey Henry and drummer Kendall Kay, with two appearances by guest trumpeter-flugelhornist Stacy Rowles and three by guitarist Larry Koonse, who accompanies Vance perfectly on “My Foolish Heart.” The melodies on Dreamsville, which include such standards as “I Hadn’t Anyone Till You,” “Invitation,” “Better Than Anything” and “Speak Low,” may be familiar but the interpretations are modern, heartfelt, and full of subtle surprises
