Tyler Damon
Born:
TYLER DAMON (b. 1987, Cincinnati, OH USA) is a Midwestern American artist whose work aims to reveal obscured, mercurial narratives via drums/percussion & free improvisation. In addition to solo work, Tyler is involved in extended duo exhibitions with guitarist Tashi Dorji and saxophonist Dave Rempis. Building upon the foundation of these pairings, the three formed the dedicated working trio Kuzu in 2017. Other recent outfits also include a Chicago triad featuring Gerrit Hatcher & Joshua Abrams, the Mars Williams-led quartet, Exit Plan, alongside Brian Sandstrom & Steve Marquette, and a startling trio with NYC improvisers Sam Weinberg & Henry Fraser

Mark Corroto's Best Recordings Of 2021
by Mark Corroto
Another year in jazz, and another year in global pandemic jazz. When we look back on these times, I believe we will refer to them much like the designations BC and AD (or BCE and CE, if you like). We'll ask, what was music like before masks and social distancing; and, remember when we squeezed together ...
Dave Rempis: The Covid Tapes
by John Sharpe
Like many during the pandemic, Chicago saxophonist Dave Rempis turned to novel outlets for his artistic expression. Some fine examples of that output are captured on the double album The Covid Tapes, which pleasingly alternates six unaccompanied performances from the practice room (of between 3 and 7 minutes), with four outdoor live outings (of between 16 ...
KUZU: All Your Ghosts In One Corner
by Mark Corroto
The edge in which the trio Kuzu lays down the five live tracks on All Your Ghosts In One Corner is sharpened by an impending sense of foreboding that accompanied (and still accompanies) the COVID-19 pandemic. Recorded at the end of a tour in March 2020, on the eve of our social isolation with clubs and ...
Tashi Dorji: Stateless
by Gareth Thompson
It was an ambitious move from Bhutan to Asheville, North Carolina, that helped shape Tashi Dorji's musical direction. The guitarist had previously been steeped in classic rock and hair metal, but as a foreign exchange student he soon absorbed punk and free jazz. Two saxophonists in particular, John Zorn and Albert Ayler, inspired Dorji to his ...
Kuzu: Purple Dark Opal
by John Sharpe
Hard as it is to believe, the wonderful Hiljaisuus (Aerophonic, 2019) documented the first encounter between Chicago reedman Dave Rempis, North Carolina-based Bhutanese guitarist Tashi Dorji and drummer Tyler Damon, under the banner Kuzu. On the basis of that triumph, the musicians put together a twenty-date US tour. For their follow up release, Purple Dark Opal, ...
John Sharpe's Best Releases Of 2019
by John Sharpe
There's sometimes a backlash against picking the year's best albums. Understandably so when it entails pitting one honest artistic endeavour against another. Best to view the selections as a chance to pick up on something that you might otherwise have missed. As a listener I always look forward to the annual year end lists for precisely ...
Astral Spirits: Lifting the Spirit of Jazz
by Jakob Baekgaard
While pop often follows predictable musical patterns, one of the greatest qualities about jazz is its sense of adventurousness and the ability to take the listener on a journey where the destination is unknown. The Astral Spirits label, based in jny: Austin, Texas, and run by musician Nate Cross, truly embraces this quality of jazz.
