Oscar Utterstrom

Born:
Trombonist Oscar Utterström plays his horn with a warm and sensitive tone. Mixing straight ahead jazz with elements of rock and electronica, the Oscar’s music is the ultimate experience in improvised music. Oscar's writing mixes his Swedish roots with the American and world music, giving the finished product a unique sound. To top things off, the use of electric trombone and a DJ makes this group one of the most exciting groups on the scene today. Their second CD Departure was released in March of 2012. Oscar is also an active arranger, having written horn arrangements for many different artists including My Morning Jacket (Bonnaroo and New Years Eve at Madison Square Garden), Canadian superstar Johnny Reid (recordings, live DVD), and Nashville Jazz Orchestra. Oscar started playing the trombone at the age of ten

John Hines

Born:
John Hines has one of the top trombone professionals in and around the Denver and Tucson areas for the past twenty five years, and is now achieving recognition in his new home market, Daytona/Orlanda, FL. “Hines plays his ax with prime advanced harmonic ideas, certainly with liquid phrasing, & an attendant voice-like, yet abstract sound. His robust & bright sonority interacts with ease with his group as he deftly weaves his wonderful web of solo artistry.” — George w. Carroll, The Musician's Ombudsman, April 2004. After studying under Ray Smith (Brigham Young University) in Provo, Utah, he played with the internationally known big band, Synthesis, including opening for Gerry Mulligan's big band at the 1988 Montreux Jazz Festival, and for Carlos Santana at the 1988 Antibes Jazz Festival outside Monte Carlo, France

Joe Fiedler

Born:
The New York Times has pinpointed a “feeling for a rugged but jaunty experimentalism” in the music of trombone veteran Joe Fiedler, a figure as esteemed in New York jazz circles as he is in the Afro-Caribbean and pop scenes. He’s an adventurous improviser and bandleader whose recordings range from solo trombone (The Howland Sessions) to quintet (Like, Strange) to trombone/tuba quartet (Big Sackbut, Sackbut Stomp, Live in Graz — “the intersection of gutbucket blues and avant-garde audacity,” JazzTimes) to chordless trio (The Crab, Sacred Chrome Orb, I’m In, Joe Fiedler Plays the Music of Albert Mangelsdorff).

Jeff Albert

Born:
Jeff Albert leads a bit of a double life as a trombonist. He is an improviser and creative musician who draws on the jazz tradition, and he is a working professional who plays just about any type of music that uses trombone or bass trombone. He relishes both roles: artist and craftsman.
Jeff has been named in the Downbeat Magazine Critics Poll Rising Star Trombone category most of the years since 2011, which should have been enough time for his star to rise… He has released albums on RogueArt and Clean Feed Records, toured and recorded with Hamid Drake’s Bindu Reggaeology band, and co-led The Lucky 7s with Jeb Bishop. His 2020 record Unanimous Sources was named a top 10 jazz record of the year in the Boston Globe. In 2022, he performed on the world premieres of Mars Williams’ “Devil’s Whistle” and Ken Vandermark’s “Two Cities Large” which was commissioned by the Instigation Festival. He has performed in improvised settings with most of the improvised music practitioners in New Orleans and Chicago, as well as a number of European based artists, so we will avoid the long list of names.
