Tanya Wills

As the grand daughter of two opera singers, Tanya knew from the very beginning that she would be an artist. She grew up immersed in music and theatre and began her artistic career as a dancer. With formal training in dance she spent many hours in a dance studio accompanying ballet classes on piano. Tanya graduated from Theatre School, where she developed her skills as a ‘triple threat’ with a major focus on voice. She went on to study voice classically in Toronto and developed her distinct mezzo sound and style. Her rich and expressive voice became her hallmark as she went on to work with many Swing and Big Bands east of and in Toronto

Halton JAZZ Singers was founded in 2013 by Darcea Hiltz as a Not-For-Profit music community hub. By 2017 it had formed a nucleus around Adam Brox, Darcea Hiltz, Jason Miller and Siona Neale. The quartet, “The Halton JAZZ Singers” (HJS), was born. Halton JAZZ Singers is a member of and cultural grant recipient from Oakville Arts Council. Halton JAZZ Singers is a winner of Burlington’s “Canada Day Performers Contest.” Halton JAZZ Singers was accepted into ArtsVest – Business for the Arts’ national training program: Participants receive tips, tools, mentorship opportunities and significant financial incentives to secure corporate sponsor partnerships. The Halton JAZZ Singers has been likened to the New York Voices and the Manhattan Transfer because of their audience appeal, their energy and ability to navigate close harmonies

The University of Toronto 12TET
The University of Toronto 12tet is a contemporary ensemble comprised of students in the Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctorate programs. Since its creation in 2012, the ensemble has established itself as a vehicle for elite players and composers in the jazz performance program and beyond. The band has been featured many times at the Rex Hotel and U of T’s Walter Hall with guests who rank among Canada’s most prominent jazz musicians. Guest soloists include Ralph Alessi, Jim Lewis and Chase Sanborn and Will Kennedy (Yellowjackets). The 12tet has recorded and released 2 full-length CDs featuring original compositions and arrangements by U of T students and Faculty: Rebirth in 2013, and Trillium Falls in 2016. Smaller than a traditional big band, the 12-piece format allows more freedom for soloists while still offering a wide range of ensemble textures

The University of Toronto Jazz Orchestra (UTJO) is now in the fifth year under the leadership of Gordon Foote. The band is quickly becoming one of Canada’s finest university jazz orchestras, and is the flagship group of the Jazz Studies Program at the University of Toronto. The UTJO has travelled within Ontario to perform concerts and workshops for many high schools. They also traveled to Winnipeg, Manitoba to perform at the National Conference of the Canadian Music Educators Association. The 18-member ensemble is part of the UofT Jazz Program, which offers degrees in jazz studies at the bachelors, masters and doctoral levels
