Allman Brothers Band: Trouble No More: 50th Anniversary Collection

by Doug Collette
The gold-embossed lettering on the front and back cover of the roughly 5" by 7" slipcase enclosing the Allman Brothers Band's box set Trouble No More belies its otherwise generic art work. Yet the graphic design isn't all that gives the lie to an otherwise positive first impression gleaned from 50th Anniversary Collection. A glance at ...

The Band

Active since:
For about six years, from 1968 through 1975, the Band was one of the most popular and influential rock groups in the world, their music embraced by critics (and, to a somewhat lesser degree, the public) as seriously as the music of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. Their albums were analyzed and reviewed as intensely as any records by their one-time employer and sometime mentor Bob Dylan. And for a long time, their personalities were as recognizable individually to the casual music public as the members of the Beatles. Grateful Dead: Saint of Circumstance: Giants Stadium, East Rutherford, NJ, 6/17/91 (3CD)

by Doug Collette
Hearing Grateful Dead's Saint of Circumstance is a significantly different experience than seeing it. Both the audio and video recordings of Giants Stadium June 17, 1991 are part of a larger box set, appropriately subtitled Shall We Go, You and I, While We Can? (Rhino, 2019). But the film, featured as last year's annual 'Meetup at ...

The Band: The Band: 50th Anniversary Edition (2CD)

by Doug Collette
If ever there was an album so complete unto itself it did not call for, but rather forfended, an expanded remaster, The Band's eponymous album of 1969 is it. Yet this double-CD is the second such release and stands on its own, apart from the larger 50th Anniversary Super Deluxe Box Set (Capitol/UMe, 2019). The first ...
Robbie Robertson: Sinematic

by Doug Collette
Robbie Robertson's ongoing fascination with the dark(er) side of human nature, combined with his longstanding fascination with film, begs the question of why it took so long for him to fuse the two interests in a solo album. There are more than a few memorable moments scattered throughout approximately sixty minutes of music on Sinematic and ...
The Band: Woodstock

by C. Michael Bailey
When the Band took the stage at Woodstock, late Sunday evening, August 17, 1969, they were a little over a month away from releasing their second recording, The Band (Capitol, the Brown Album") and a year past the release of their debut recording, Music from Big Pink (Capitol, 1968). Later, on January 12, 1970, the group ...
Woodstock—Back to the Garden: 50th Anniversary Experience

by John Kelman
First things first. For all but the most committed of fans, knowledge of what transpired, how it transpired and when it transpired at the now-legendary 1969 Woodstock Music & Arts Fair has, despite a variety of initial, 25th and 40th Anniversary audio and video releases, been severely limited. As engaging, entertaining and well-constructed as these various ...
Tom Pierson: Last Works

by Doug Hall
As musicians make choices and pursue a passion for music which also directs their musical orbit, looking at jazz composer, arranger and pianist Tom Pierson's resume, it is clear that a creative search for originality and exploration was paramount, from the very beginning. Gifted at the start, Pierson was a piano prodigy and a soloist with ...
