Soulive

Stax is back with Soulive's No Place Like Soul, a bold new statement from New York's preeminent groove machine and the first new-artist release from the Concord Music Group's relaunch of the legendary Memphis soul label. Since forming Soulive in 1999, guitarist Eric Krasno, organist Neal Evans and drummer Alan Evans have developed a reputation as one of the most sought after instrumental soul-funk trios around, a hard-touring live act that's thrown down everywhere from small rock clubs to opening arena shows for the Rolling Stones. Yet an interesting thing happened when the three veteran musicians hooked up last year to begin work on the follow-up to 2005's critically acclaimed Break Out: They discovered that rather than extend their past achievements, they were more interested in racking up some new ones. We all show up at our rehearsal spot, and we're sitting around looking at each other," Alan remembers

Teach A Man To Phish

Read "Teach A Man To Phish" reviewed by Leo Sidran

I won't bury the lede. Last week I saw Phish in concert at Forest Hills Stadium on two consecutive nights. It was a long time coming for me. Loyal listeners of my The Third Story podcast have noticed a quiet apprehension about the Phish phenomenon--or more broadly, the jam band scene--threaded through past conversations. Some friends ...

Righteous Rooster: Fowl Play

Read "Fowl Play" reviewed by Richard J Salvucci

Time was when organ trios were thick on the ground. They were just bluesy enough, soul-inflected and grooving enough to capture a younger audience raised on something other than swing or even bop, although there were a few hard-bop outfits too. Many fondly remember Charles Earland who covered pop hits like “Aquarius" or “More Today than ...

Book of Queens

Read "Book of Queens" reviewed by Doug Collette

Released in 2023 with next to no fanfare, the very gestation of the Eric Krasno/Stanton Moore Project's first effort carries a cachet all its own. Recorded at Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock, New York, and mixed by Jim Scott (Tedeschi Trucks Band, Wilco), Book of Queens is tribute to women in music wherein the nine covers ...

Eric Krasno: Bridging the gap

Read "Eric Krasno: Bridging the gap" reviewed by Leo Sidran

Guitarist, songwriter, producer Eric Krasno on what he's doing during these strange and trying times, his experience as a podcaster, producer, and provider of deep and soulful grooves, the development of Soulive, Lettuce, & Velour Recordings, the values and expectations of jam and jam band audiences, “the boom bap with interesting chord changes," learning how to ...

Funky Chemist: Groove Generator

Read "Groove Generator" reviewed by Chris May

You know where you are with organ / guitar / drums trios. The genre is among the most rigorously codified in jazz and has remained fundamentally unchanged since Jimmy Smith erupted on the US scene in the mid 1950s. In large part this is because the tonalities and textures of the Hammond B3 are finite and ...

Lettuce: Elevate

Read "Elevate" reviewed by Doug Collette

In what is perhaps an act of self-fulfilling purpose, Lettuce lives up to the title of this album, despite the fact it is not the same band that recorded Rage (Velour Recordings, 2008) or Fly (Velour Recordings, 2012). The current lineup is missing the two main instrumentalists from that pinnacle of progression: guitarist Eric Krasno and ...
