Sophie Milman

Sophie Milman was born twenty years ago in the Ural Mountains in the heart of Russia. Her family suffered through many personal hardships, lack of freedoms and repression. When the Berlin wall fell making it possible for them to leave, the family emigrated, were stripped of their Russian citizenship, and settled in Israel with a few dollars in their pockets, some Russian paintings, boxes of Russian books and some old jazz vinyl records. Although very young, memories of Russia, especially of her grandfather who was cantor at the their local synagogue, and Russian folk songs would have a profound influence on her. Sophie Milman’s formative years were spent growing up in Israel

Northern Voices: Heather Bambrick and Brenda Earle Stokes

Read "Northern Voices: Heather Bambrick and Brenda Earle Stokes" reviewed by Dan Bilawsky

There's a vast array of notable singers that have been given unto us from the Great White North. In terms of star power you have Joni Mitchell, k.d. Lang, Sarah McLachlan, Shania Twain, Bruce Cockburn, the lovably twangy Neil Young and a croaky Leonard Cohen. And, of course, we have genre-straddling, jazz-breathing mega-names like Michael Bublé ...

We discuss the jazz content in each release, the vocal approach of each singer, and the elusive concept of sultriness. Female jazz singers are often packaged and sold as sex objects. Some are more comfortable expressing their sensual sides than ...

Festival International de Jazz de MontréalMontréal, CanadaJune 28-July 7, 2012From the time of the airplane's descent to the airport in Montréal, I knew something was different and perhaps special about this place. Instead of a square or rectangular grid style of suburban housing plots, from my window I saw circular formations of housing, ...

Peter Appleyard: Sophisticated Ladies

Read "Sophisticated Ladies" reviewed by Dan Bilawsky

Peter Appleyard seems to have a way with the ladies. The octogenarian vibraphonist brings his virile mallet work to bear while escorting a dozen lovely songbirds through some smartly arranged standards on this, his second release the span of a few months. Appleyard started off the year by looking toward the past, issuing a previously unreleased ...

Halie Loren: Heart First

Read "Heart First" reviewed by Dan Bilawsky

Though vocalist Halie Loren has made a name for herself by bringing her warm and inviting alto to bear on a mixture of pop and jazz classics, she has received far too little attention in the United States. Much of the praise heaped upon her comes from Japan, where her fan base is strong and plentiful, ...

All About Jazz & Jazz Near You were built to promote jazz music: both recorded and live events. We rely primarily on venues, festivals and musicians to promote their events through our platform. With club closures, shelter in place and an uncertain future, we've pivoted our platform to collect, promote and broadcast livestream concerts to support our jazz musician friends. This is a significant but neccesary effort that will help musicians now, and in the future. You can help offset the cost of this essential undertaking by making a donation today. In return, we'll deliver an ad-free experience (which includes hiding the bottom right video ad). Thank you.
