Nick Freer: Apperceptions

Read "Apperceptions" reviewed by Glenn Astarita

by Glenn Astarita

Australian guitarist Nick Freer makes no secret of his admiration for Allan Holdsworth, and Apperceptions wears that influence proudly, like a sharp suit cut from familiar cloth. Legato runs that melt note boundaries, chord voicings that wander through restless harmonic territory, and melodies approached sideways rather than head-on--it is all there, executed with clear devotion.

Shmeisani Jazz Massive: Shmeisani Jazz Massive

Read "Shmeisani Jazz Massive" reviewed by Blue Summers

by Blue Summers

Jazz is alive and living in Jordan. Shmeisani Jazz Massive is an Amman-based band, but do not expect much in the way of local musical influences (not that that would be a bad thing). These guys would sound at home in any American jazz club.  The core band consists of Motassem Azar ("Azar") on drums, John McKay ("John") on ...

Hilarious Disasters: Unnatural Root

Read "Unnatural Root" reviewed by Ian Patterson

by Ian Patterson

You can take the gal out of Ukraine, but you cannot take Ukraine out of the gal. Kateryna Ziabliuk may pursue her music in Poland these days,  but with Unnatural Root, the debut album of her group Hilarious Disasters, Ziabliuk draws deeply from her Ukrainian traditions. The Kyiv-born pianist, composer and journalist--she co-founded the jazz portal ...

Erica von Kleist: Picc Pocket

Read "Picc Pocket" reviewed by Jack Bowers

by Jack Bowers

Those who favor puns and clever wordplay should get their kicks from the song titles alone on Picc Pocket, a splendid new recording by piccolo guru Erica von Kleist 's hand-picced--and fun-loving-- quartet and its spicc-tacular guest artists, trombonist Jennifer Krupa and tenor saxophonist John Ellis. The piccolo (a close cousin of the flute) ...

Triple Blind: Cold Walk

Read "Cold Walk" reviewed by Rob Garratt

by Rob Garratt

A lot of beautiful, ugly, and--more than anything--middling music was made during the pandemic. In the first camp we might lump Triple Blind, whose remotely recorded, self-titled debut EP was defined by the isolation of its players. So for its follow-up, the quartet appear at pains to underline the shared space and interpersonal interaction that birthed ...

Entre Amigos: Joyful Foundation

Read "Joyful Foundation" reviewed by Jack Bowers

by Jack Bowers

Joyful Foundation is a near-perfect name for the third album by Entre Amigos, wherein the Chicago-based quartet welcomes aboard one of the jazz world's rising stars, trumpeter Justin Copeland, to play--naturally--The Music of Justin Copeland on an album whose upbeat posture and sunny disposition help make it utterly charming and highly listenable. There is, ...

Marco Colonna: Eight Decades

Read "Eight Decades" reviewed by Neri Pollastri

by Neri Pollastri

Steven Husted and Friends: Two Nights--'Live'

Read "Two Nights--'Live'" reviewed by Jack Bowers

by Jack Bowers

Two Nights--'Live,' Texas-based bassist Steven Husted's third album, was recorded in front of a (presumably) appreciative audience in April and May 2026 at the Brass Peacock in Georgetown, Texas. The word “presumably" is needed because, for reasons unknown, audience response at the end of each number has been erased. Husted's “friends" on this concert ...
