About the Album
A high-energy instrumental blending jazz, rock, and old-school hip-hop swagger
Luxembourg guitarist and composer David Laborier returns with “Owl Skewl,” a vibrant
new instrumental that fuses jazz sophistication with rock attitude and the unmistakable
bounce of early-90s hip-hop. Clocking in at 4 minutes and 8 seconds, the track showcases
Laborier’s signature blend of precision, playfulness, and groove-driven storytelling.
The title itself is a nod to two worlds that unexpectedly collided during the writing
process:
• Laborier’s deep dive into Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg’s classic West Coast sound
• His daughters’ newfound fascination with Harry Potter and Hedwig, the saga’s
iconic snowy owl
The result is a piece that feels both nostalgic and fresh — a musical universe where
old-school meets owl school.
Built around a tight rhythm section of multiple guitars, electric bass, and drums, “Owl
Skewl” moves with a confident, head-nodding pulse. The track’s standout moment arrives
in the form of a three-piece horn section (trumpet, alto saxophone, trombone), which
takes center stage in a dynamic interlude that bridges two fiery guitar solos. The horns
don’t just add color — they elevate the track into a full-blown celebration of groove,
attitude, and ensemble interplay.
“Owl Skewl” captures Laborier’s ability to merge genres without diluting their essence.
The jazz vocabulary is there, the rock energy is there, and the hip-hop influence gives the
whole piece a swagger that feels instantly infectious. It’s a track built to move — whether
that’s tapping a foot, nodding a head, or simply smiling at the sheer joy of musicians
playing at full tilt.
With this release, David Laborier continues to expand his sonic world, delivering music
that is both technically sharp and irresistibly fun. “Owl Skewl” is a reminder that
instrumental music can groove just as hard as any vocal track — and sometimes even
harder.
