Rhys Chatham
Rhys Chatham is a composer, guitarist and trumpet player from Manhattan, currently living in Paris, who altered the DNA of rock and created a new type of urban music by fusing the overtone-drenched minimalism of the early 60s with the relentless, elemental fury of the Ramones — the textural intricacies of the avant-garde colliding with the visceral punch of electric guitar-slinging punk rock. Starting with Guitar Trio in the 1970s and culminating with A Crimson Grail for 200 electric guitars in 2009, Chatham has been working for over 30 years to make use of armies of electric guitars in special tunings to merge the extended-time music of the sixties and seventies with serious hard rock. Parallel with his rock-influenced pieces, Chatham has been working with various brass configurations since 1982, and recently has developed a completely new approach to collaborations, improvised and compositional pieces involving trumpet through performances and recordings that started in 2009
Colin Fisher / Mike Gennaro: Tactile Stories
by Mark Corroto
Does the world need another free jazz duo recording? Absolutely not, unless (dammit) it is as intoxicating as Tactile Stories by the Canadian duo of Colin Fisher and Mike Gennaro. Fisher's talents are spread across both the saxophone, which he hoists for three tracks, and electric guitar heard on the final Epinoia." Elsewhere, he can be ...
Space Quartet: Directions
by Mark Corroto
Listen closely to Directions by Rafael Toral's Space Quartet and try to ignore the voice in your head of June Tyson chanting, space is the place, space is the place." While this is an instrumental production and Toral was born more than fifty years after Sun Ra, a similar aura permeates these six tracks. It's not ...

Rhys Chatham Birmingham Town Hall June 7, 2014 When the guitarist/composer Rhys Chatham performs with his small combo, he's usually clad casually, but in his role as conductor for this large-scale performance, he was suitably be-suited. Rhys Chatham: Outdoor Spell
by AAJ Italy Staff
Sensazione confermata ...
Intervista a Rhys Chatham
by AAJ Italy Staff
Rhys Chatham è un personaggio. Peculiare. Complesso. In perenne ricerca. Dunque eclettico. Dispersivo e concentrato, a seconda. È una figura chiave per capire un pezzo, e che grande!, della musica d'avanguardia contemporanea, in particolare newyorchese. Un mix, come potete leggere, che in una sola voce (che sia tromba o chitarra poco importa) fa confluire pezzi diversi ...
Interview | Rhys Chatham
Rhys Chatham has played trumpet since the early-1980s but it’s still appropriate to recognize his new Brass Trio as a significant sea change. Known for organizing terrifyingly large ensembles with up to 400 guitarists, the pioneering composer who has found a common thread running through punk fury, minimalism, and avant-garde jazz displayed the strongest trumpet work ...
