Hal Galper

Born:

In his fifth decade as a major jazz artist, Hal Galper continues the innovation that has made him one of the most surprising and satisfying pianists alive. Galper is at the forefront of players reaching audiences through the time-tested magic of swing while integrating adventurous rhythmic and harmonic concepts. The exploration of rubato playing in his trio is uncovering possibilities that deepen the jazz experience for musicians and listeners alike. On the All About Jazz website, reviewer Dan McGlenaghan summarized the Galper effect:

“He has also found two like-minded musical brothers in bassist Jeff Johnson and drummer John Bishop, versatile and sophisticated players who can keep up with his “Rubato” concept, one of playing loose and free with tempo and harmony—even structure—twisting the familiar forms like a rubber band, then pulling them back and letting them fly free.”

Grant Simpson

Born:

The dynamism and exhilaration that defines solo jazz piano began with the great stride piano masters of the 20s and 30s. These innovators, such as Thomas 'Fats' Waller, James P. Johnson and Willie "The Lion" Smith, pioneered a style and shaped an era that was, and continues to be, the most comprehensive and joyful jazz piano style in history . . . the style known as Stride Piano. As a teenager, I heard a recording of "Fats" Waller and was immediately captivated and inspired. I enrolled in traditional music lessons and amidst a conventional study of the classics, began "picking out" sections of the Fats Waller and James P Johnson recordings by ear. My initial excitement and enthusiasm for the stride style has flourished and grown more with every passing year. During the past 25 years as a professional pianist, I have performed in hundreds venues throughout the world including Korea, throughout the Caribbean, United States and Canada, appearing as a featured artist at many concerts and festivals including The Vancouver Dixieland Festival, Hermann's Jazz Club, on the MS Oosterdam, Montreal's Queen Elizabeth Hotel and many more

G.F. Mlely

Born:

Pianist-composer G. F. Mlely has been featured artist and composer in concert, festival, and club venues throughout Europe and the United States. In the much published article, "G. F. Mlely, A Trail Of Endurance" journalist Nathan Gold described how in 1983 the jazz pianist-composer, with an album in Top 10 airplay, was on a solo piano concert tour of Europe, when midway along he received information that caused him to suddenly abandon the tour due to personal circumstances, and to leave off playing professionally for nearly two decades. As of this writing, however, with two new solo piano albums, Re-Entry [2000] and 88 Keys and Counting [2002], and one trio album, A Little Night Waltz [2003], Mlely has returned, and, as AllAboutJazz.com staff reviewer John Kelman writes, Mlely is, quite simply, back, and with a vengeance." "Mlely is one of the few pianists out there who can extend a solo piano interpretation to seven minutes and maintain interest throughout," notes All About Jazz

About Franck Amsallem

Musician

Franck Amsallem

Born:

Franck Amsallem was born in 1961 in Oran (Algeria), and then grew up in Nice, France. His parents, having repatriated the family piano, started him on classical piano at seven, which he gave up a few years later. The large family, the cramped apartment weren’t at all propitious surroundings for the old teacher’s stale lessons. Still, however, the family owned a large collection of 45 RPM records where Ray Charles mixed with Glenn Miller and the Four Tops. In all logic then, he was seduced in adolescence, by the sound of the blues and swing and started taking music lessons at the Nice Conservatory where, considered too old for the piano (!), he signed up for classical saxophone and soon earned a first prize.
