Jesse Davis Quartet: Reflections

Read "Reflections" reviewed by Jack Bowers

One of ...

Eddie Allen's PUSH: Rhythm People

Read "Rhythm People" reviewed by Jack Bowers

Brooklyn-based trumpeter Eddie Allen and his well-groomed sextet, PUSH, truly are Rhythm People, as they prove time and again on Allen's ninth recording as leader of his own group. Musician

Anna Kolchina

Born:

Anna Kolchina was born on March 8, 1984, in Ufa, Republic of Bashkortostan, Russia. From a young age, she was drawn to the arts, exploring theater and dance, while also studying classical piano with Evgeny Bloshchitsky at Music School No. 1, named after Nariman Sabitov.

Her introduction to jazz came through her older brother, a saxophonist, who shared with her a few classic jazz records by Count Basie, Charlie Parker, and John Coltrane. The music fascinated her with its complexity, emotion, and freedom.

Inspired by her brother, Anna pursued formal jazz studies and enrolled in the Jazz Department of the Ufa College of Arts. There, she studied under vocal teacher Svetlana Slyaguzova, who played a significant role in her musical development, and worked closely with pianist Alina Kruglikova, who introduced her to an extensive collection of jazz records, which became the cornerstone of her early exposure to jazz.

Anthony Branker: Manifestations of a Diasporic Groove & Spirit

Read "Manifestations of a Diasporic Groove & Spirit" reviewed by Dan McClenaghan

At the time of this writing (early 2026), the United States is beset by an odious president, a racist sociopath who seems hellbent on erasing all references to achievement or success of anyone of African descent--leaving aside that we are all of African descent; but some made the relocation to North America involuntarily. Stubborn ...

2025 Year in Review by the Numbers: The Magnificent Seven and the Pluralism of Taste

Read "2025 Year in Review by the Numbers: The Magnificent Seven and the Pluralism of Taste" reviewed by Marek J. Śmietański

My Journey From Sports Analytics to Counting Jazz I've always had a soft spot for statistics and rankings--especially those that try to say something more than just “what people like." This is probably a result of my rigorous mathematical-informatics education and the scientific research I conducted over a dozen years ago on classification and ranking methods ...
