Dave Scheffler

Born:

Dave Scheffler is a pianist/keyboardist, composer and producer living in Joshua Tree, California.  The son of an aerospace engineer who worked on the Saturn rocket at the Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama in the 1960s, Scheffler grew up predominantly in Charlotte, North Carolina. After high school, he played keyboards in a local fusion band called Spectrum, which opened for such names as Ramsey Lewis, Hubert Laws and the Dregs (formerly the Dixie Dregs), before attending the prestigious Berklee School of Music in Boston, where he graduated with honors.

Relocating to Los Angeles in the md-’80s, he found work in the commercial music world – arranging, producing, and recording a diverse range of artists encompassing R&B, hip-hop, pop and world music. His successful production music library, Drama King, licenses music worldwide. Since moving to the otherworldly desertscape of Joshua Tree in 2014, Scheffler has returned to his jazz roots, channeling this meditative existence into an album of original compositions influenced by the cool modal jazz of the late ’50s/early ’60s (Miles Davis, Bill Evans) and fusion greats of the ’70s (Weather Report, Return to Forever), and on into the solo work of Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter. His modal approach to melody and harmony compositions falls under the rubric of 21st Century Modern Jazz.

Hard Bop Messengers

Active since:

Live At The Last Hotel, the upcoming release from John Covelli’s Hard Bop Messengers, is a jazz album that literally tells a story. The visionary, original, genre-defying musical journey that reminds you of what jazz can be, was born from a residency at the REAL Last Hotel in downtown St. Louis. Each song paints a picture with bounce and bustle, that takes you to a place and time that somehow feels both nostalgic and modern. The lyrics tell the story of the trials and tribulations of a fictional hotel through the eyes of its employees.

Covelli knew he had something special when he assembled this group and he gives them all room to shine. Nick Savage, Chris Meschede, Luke Sailor, and Ben Shafer are, like himself, of the esteemed Webster University jazz program. Matt Krieg, originally from St Louis, puts the vocals where they need to be to tell Covelli’s lyrical tale. Covelli has played in dozens of bands over the years and learned just as many styles.

Robert Dunn

Born:

I was born into the sort of family that made me want to stay by myself in my room practicing guitar & writing songs. Somehow I developed this mindset where I felt drawn to the surreal/abstract so I gravitated to music that that was that way (psychedelic, Hendrix, Doors, Beatles, etc.) I began studying jazz and as I progressed through bebop, hard bop, modal and into the 'avant garde' or free jazz I began to absorb these genres and developed my own musical approach. I did put together musical units mostly in LA, and where I currently reside - the San Francisco Bay Area that did attract some attention and this is what I am continuing to do to this day.
