Merzbow (メルツバウ) is a noise music project created in Tokyo in 1979 under the direction of musician Masami Akita (秋田昌美). Since 1979, Akita has formed two record labels and has contributed releases to numerous independent record labels. Tatsuya Yoshida / Martín Escalante: The Sound of Raspberry
by Mark Corroto
This LP may be the revelation of 2025--or a sonic ordeal, depending on your tolerance for noise and your grasp of history. Japanese drummer Tatsuya Yoshida and Mexican saxophonist Martín Escalante met at the perfect moment in December 2023 to record 14 tracks at Tokyo's Bar Aja. The result, The Sound of Raspberry, is the love ...
David Maranha / Rodrigo Amado: Wrecks
by Mark Corroto
There was a children's television show that aired every Saturday morning in the 1960s where the host faced the camera while holding up a looking glass. He would say something to this effect: Hello friends, today I see Billy, Allison, Teddy, etc." Those watching thrilled to hear their name or the name of a sibling or ...
Michel Levasseur Leaves the Building
by Mike Chamberlain
The run-up to this year's 39th edition of the Festival International de Musique Actuelle de Victoriaville (FIMAV, or Victo) has been anything but routine. First, it was announced in December that the City of Victoriaville had rescinded the festival's contract for the use of the Colisée des Bois-Francs arena as one of the festival's two main ...
Paul G. Smyth & John Wiese: The Outlier
by Mark Corroto
The Outlier! by Paul G. Smyth and John Wiese is an ambient recording. No, it's a free improvisation set, or could it be industrial sound or noise? Yes, and yes again. Recorded before an audience in The National Concert Hall in Dublin, Ireland, this duo brings together pianist and Weekertoft Records label chief Smyth with the ...
Dave Sewelson: Smooth FreeJazz
by Mark Corroto
If you're a lover of adventurous music, you've certainly had the following experience. You take a seat in a coffee house or even worse in your dentist's chair and out of the speakers flows (stifle your tears) smooth jazz. You might welcome the John Cageian sound of the espresso frothier or the Merzbow noise of the ...
Merzbow / Mats Gustafsson / Balázs Pándi: Cuts Open
by Mark Corroto
Calling Cuts Open by Merzbow (aka Masami Akita), Mats Gustafsson and Balázs Pándi their sotto voce record would be like saying you received a love tap from Mike Tyson. This is the trio's fifth release, following the inaugural Cuts (RareNoise Records, 2013), Live In Tabačka 13/04/12 (Tabačka Records, 2015) and two sessions with the addition of ...
Keiji Haino / Merzbow / Balázs Pándi: Become The Discovered, Not The Discoverer
by Mark Corroto
There are two ways to deal with an oncoming storm. One is to run and take cover, and the other is to confront its fury head-on. Sure, it's rare to require music listeners to plan a strategy before pressing play or dropping a needle to vinyl (this disc is released as a CD or 2-LP), but ...

Merzbow/Mats Gustafsson/Balázs Pándi/Thurston Moore: Cuts of Guilt, Cuts Deeper
by Mark Corroto
The Cuts Quartet is a sort of assembled supergroup. But we are not talking Traveling Wilburys or Audioslave here. Groups where the sum is certainly less than the parts. No, the amalgam of Japanese noise artist Merzbow (aka Masami Akita), Swedish saxophonist Mats Gustafsson (Fire! Orchestra, The Thing), American guitarist Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), and Hungarian ...
