Born:
Notoriously playful pianist and composer Mathias Landæus has released over twenty albums as a leader on labels like Moserobie, Clean Feed, Prophone, Amigo and others. Originally from Lund, he lived in New York in the 1990's, then moved to Stockholm where he became an important figure on the jazz scene in the late 90's. The tuba is not a horn that you'll hear that often in a typical jazz ensemble, but when you do, it's memorable. by Maurice Hogue
I was so taken by bassist Billy Mohler's playing with the Dan Rosenboom Quartet which opens this show, I had to go find Mohler's music. He's featured in the third hour. Also featured are a bunch of great new releases: multi-reedist Mat Walerian with a superb band of Matthew Shipp, William Parker and Hamid Drake, saxophonists ...
Roots Magic, Audio Cave Artists & Alan Braufman

by Maurice Hogue
A new release by the Italian Quartet Roots Magic is always welcome. Their contemporary and improvisatory approach to old blues tunes and the way they always put their own touch on the music of avant-garde jazz composers is kind of unique on the European scene. Take Root Among the Stars, out on Clean Feed, should be ...
Mountweazel, Tim Haldeman & More

by Maurice Hogue
Musicians are no different than many of us as we move from place to place for reasons of opportunity, love, employment, school, freedom, safety and peace. This week's edition of One Man's Jazz features three sax players who have done just that. Sweden's Alberto Pinton is Italian, but has lived in Sweden for many years. You'll ...
Tomasz Dabrowski, Thumbscrew and other new releases

Back in January 2018, for all intents and purposes, Cuneiform Records shut down most of their operation. A total reassessment of their position in the industry and the state of the industry itself were scheduled. Would they be back or not? Lo and behold, some months later they returned and we have to thank Mary Halvorson, ...
