Gardyn Jazz Orchestra

Composed of world-class musicians from across the Philadelphia region, the Gardyn Jazz Orchestra has an unmistakable style and ability to inspire people - with enthusiasm, virtuosity and incredible sounds from each chart played. Experiencing the band live is always a trip! Each show is juiced with hip arrangements, strong musical soloists, and unkempt hard groovin’ swing provided by the rhythm section. Derived from the Saxon words GAR, meaning "a weapon", and DYN meaning "sound or alarm", combined with the termination ER gives the name "Gair-den-er", which means "a warrior"

The Beatnik Preachers

Active since:

Musically Exquisite, Lyrically Explicit - Artistically Evocative, Socially Provocative -  the Beatnik Preachers meld a blistering style of jazz with original beat-poetry to form a unique ensemble that provides a palette for both the ears and the mind.

Anthony Norris (trumpet and spoken word) joined by Rob Burke (sax) gather the funky drumming of  Miles Henry and the groove of bassist Nick Haywood to drive a quintet allowing the sublime piano of Joel Louis to evoke and provoke both melody and harmony. Norris and Burke are melodically divine yet technically elaborate, thereby adding a unique interplay of risk and trust within the ensemble that is joyous and raucous. Firmly in the spirit of jazz whilst celebrating the human condition and investigating issues that currently face each and every one of us.

Musician

David Seymour

Born:

I am a songwriter and composer based in North London, where I have been involved in the music scene of this global city since my days at the African and South American arts centre Jenako Arts in the early 80s. That was where I introduced London to Capoeira music by bringing over a master from Brazil, and promoted interest in the Kora by bringing Sanjali Jobarteh here from Senegal. We also provided some of the acts for the first Womad festivals, the Nimes festival of Street Music and other events. If you were in London in the 80s you will remember all the free music festivals that used to happen in parks around London. Jenako Arts brought Arrow (Feeling Hot, Hot, Hot) to the UK, as well as Ruben Blades, Yemaya and others. It was also where I worked closely with the Goan jazz guitarist Amancio D'Silva and the leader of Orchestra Jazira, Folo Graff - a collaboration that lasted many years.
