Harvie S: Building A Better Jam Session

by Peter Rubie
Jam sessions are strange creatures. A friend recently told me a story about a session he went to in a private home where a visiting pianist had basically come loaded for bear and would not relinquish the piano chair until she was finally thrown off by the host so others could have a turn. I don't ...
David Janeway: Interchange

by Dan McClenaghan
Unearthing and releasing old music--even sounds sourced from decades old tapes--has become common in jazz. Pianist Bill Evans (thank you. Zev Feldman) has enjoyed something of a twenty-first-century renaissance. Pianist Fred Hersch released @ The Village Vanguard (Palmetto Records, 2018), recorded in 1997; and 2021 saw the posthumous release from pianist Masabumi Kikuchi, Hanamichi (Red Hook), ...
Michael Costantino: The Song Inside the Tune

by Geannine Reid
Rhythm, the lifeblood of jazz performances, takes center stage in Michael Costantino's album, The Song Inside the Tune. The album explores the vast terrain of rhythmic structures, with the trio's expert navigation of the eighth note serving as the backbone of their groove. The exploration unfolds a multifaceted perspective on Costantino's rhythmic approach, and thus, his ...
Vin Venezia: The Venetian

by Jack Bowers
Vin Venezia won't blow your mind or even knock your socks off--that's simply not his style. The New Jersey-based guitarist will, however, lure you into his orbit with the sort of smooth and mellow sounds and precisely articulated phrases often associated such masters as Jim Hall, Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass and others who blazed a trail ...
Bobby Kapp: Synergy

by Jack Bowers
The subtitle of Synergy is Bobby Kapp plays the music of Richard Sussman," which is true to some extent. To be more precise, drummer Kapp is at the heart of a septet, conducted by Scott Reeves, that features composer Sussman at the piano. So, while Bobby Kapp plays" is technically correct, it does not represent the ...
Wondering: Harvie S and Roni Ben-Hur featuring Sylvia Cuenca

by Dan Bilawsky
Though it may seem to be shrouded in mystery, there's a clear explanation for the dovetailing dynamic and palpable chemistry between guitarist Roni Ben-Hur and bassist Harvie S. We listen intently and we play with a lot of generosity toward each other," shares the noted six-stringer. Believe it or not, it's as simple--and sophisticated--as that.
CeCe Gable: Next Year's Song

by Dan Bilawsky
To hear CeCe Gable sing is to encounter pure truth. A late bloomer whose early passion for dance was eventually eclipsed by the lure of jazz, she's spent the past three decades honing her craft and establishing herself as a sincere storyteller adept at honoring a lyric and elevating every number she inhabits. Since first taking ...
Skip Grasso: Becoming

by Jack Bowers
If guitarist Skip Grasso's name was not so prominently displayed on the album cover, a listener would be hard-pressed to ascertain that Becoming was his gig. Yes, Grasso does bring a lot to the table, but no more than pianist Anthony Pocetti, bassist Harvie S or drummer Billy Drummond who together round out Grasso's impressive quartet. ...
