There's lots of new releases sampled in this episode. The critics' darlings, Thumbscrew is back and meeting their usual standards of creativity and originality. Popular French bassist Sarah Murcia sings off-beat stuff on her new Eyeballing, while the Finnish quartet Alder Ego stretches the boundaries on their latest. The pandemic looms over the new release by ...

by Karl Ackermann
Drums of Life--Drums of DeathThe ruins of the Anasazi people stand undisturbed in the cliffs between the high mesas and the canyon floors of the southwest. Dating to 2500 B.C., the multi-story adobe pueblos and stone cities were the sites of the ancient indigenous peoples of North America. Archeologists have uncovered an assortment of percussion instruments ...
Hafez Modirzadeh with Kris Davis, Tyshawn Sorey and Craig Taborn: Facets
by Troy Dostert
A rigorous, sometimes imposingly cerebral innovator, tenor saxophonist Hafez Modirzadeh has dedicated himself since the 1980s to ever more ambitious ways of opening up the Western musical tradition to scrutiny. A particular obsession is the restrictive quality of conventional instrumental tunings, which, as Modirzadeh perceives them, can limit the possibilities available to improvisers and composers alike, ...

Throttle Elevator Music: Emergency Exit
by Karl Ackermann
The sub-genre of punk jazz" has existedon paper since the 1970s when Patti Smith proposed a collaboration with Ornette Coleman. That partnership did not materialize. When all the moving pieces are pulled together there is little substance to suggest that the category ever shared specific practices or conventions. Then, in 2012, Throttle Elevator Music emerged with ...

Hafez Modirzadeh
HAFEZ MODIRZADEH (aka Hafez Modir - woodwinds and flutes) has published and recorded extensively on an original cross-cultural musical approach he terms "chromodal", from which he received a Ph.D. from Wesleyan University, and lectures on internationally. Hafez' horn playing is deeply rooted in the legacy of African-American musical traditions, yet is also compelled by his Persian heritage. Hafez creates melodies that adapt Middle Eastern and African-American sources into an intelligent and most original melodic conception. His invention of the "chromodal" method allows for a nonlinear improvisational practice that is able to adapt to and incorporate multiple systems of music, permitting a cross-cultural "conversation." Twice an NEA Jazz Fellow ('89, '91), Modir was granted a Fulbright to work with Gnawan and Flamenco musicians in Morocco and Andalucia, in 2005-06, which resulted in his latest CD, "Bemsha Alegria" (available on Disques Chromodal, at www.hafezmodir.com)

by Alberto Bazzurro

This is the third album from the fertile pairing of cornetist Bobby Bradford and reedman Hafez Modirzadeh. This ...
Bobby Bradford: Live At The Magic Triangle

After the well-received Live At The Open Gate (NoBusiness, 2016), the arrival of a second outing for the front line of cornetist Bobby Bradford and saxophonist Hafez Modirzadeh doesn't come as a surprise. This time out, bassist Ken Filiano and drummer Royal Hartigan (who both feature on Modirzadeh's Post Chromodal Out! (Pi Recordings, 2012) replace Mark ...
Bobby Bradford/Hafez Modirzadeh/Mark Dresser/Alex Cline: Live At The Open Gate

Veteran cornetist Bobby Bradford's penchant for conversational give and take in tandem with another horn is much in evidence on this 2013 live date from The Center for the Arts in Los Angeles. And in alto saxophonist Hafez Modirzadeh, a Professor of Creative/World Music at San Francisco State University, he has found a foil who at ...
