Various Artists: Hommage à Eberhard Weber
by Mario Calvitti
Chris Dingman: The Subliminal and the Sublime
by Dave Wayne
Search the word “subliminal" and you get the following: “below the threshold of sensation or consciousness; perceived by or affecting someone's mind without their being aware of it." Do the same for “sublime" and you have to be sure you include the word “definition" or else you get the website for the popular ska- metal band. ...

Bastet: Eye of Ra
by Dave Wayne
Billing themselves as “original modern West Coast Jazz," I half- hoped to see Shelly Manne and Bud Shank pop up amongst the credits on Bastet's debut album Eye of Ra. Alas, the music of this Bay Area-based quartet apparently has very little to do with the Los Angeles- based West Coast jazz scene that spawned such ...

Gary Burton: On ECM & Playing With Pat Metheny
by Mark Sullivan
Vibraphonist Gary Burton was a busy man at the 2015 Detroit Jazz Festival. He was a member of the Mack Avenue Superband (organized by Mack Avenue Records, his current record label), and joined Artist-in-Residence Pat Metheny for two shows. The Pat Metheny/Gary Burton Quartet Reunion took place on Saturday night, and the North American premiere of ...
Eberhard Weber: Hommage à Eberhard Weber
by Mark Sullivan
Hommage celebrates the 75th birthday of bassist/composer Eberhard Weber. His distinctive custom-built, five-string electro-acoustic upright bass sound has been the foundation of many ECM recordings, almost right from the beginning: as leader of his own groups; longtime sideman for saxophonist Jan Garbarek; and other ECM recording artists including Ralph Towner, Gary Burton, Wolfgang Dauner, Pat Metheny ...
Eberhard Weber: Hommage à Eberhard Weber
by John Kelman
Despite being waylaid from playing the instrument that defined his approach to both performance and composition by a severe 2007 stroke, Eberhard Weber has managed to accomplish the seemingly impossible feat of continuing to make recordings that revolve around his instantly recognizable, custom-made electro-acoustic instrument: 2013's Resumé and 2015's appropriately titled Encore, both on ECM Records, ...
