Murray Middleman grew up in a musical family, exposed to the dynamic rhythms of swing and big band through his father's professional dance band in Philadelphia. At the tender age of 10, he was sitting in and playing with the band, and he was hooked! Murray has studied classical clarinet and saxophone since childhood. He learned jazz theory and improvisation with Jimmy Amadee, Woody Herman's composer and Vince Trombetta, saxophonist with The Mike Douglas Show. He also studied classical clarinet with Donald Montanaro, clarinetist with the Philadelphia Orchestra. By 14, Murray had organized his own jazz group, performing his original jazz compositions on PBS television. Billy Krechmer

Wilhelm Frederick "Billy" Krechmer, 92, a clarinetist whose name once was synonymous with jazz in Philadelphia, died of heart failure at Sunrise Assisted Living in Paoli. Born in Millville, Cumberland County, Mr. Krechmer had long resided in Longport, N.J. He also had lived in West Philadelphia. Mr. Krechmer recorded with Herb Gordon's band and toured with the Ted Lewis Orchestra during the big-band era, but in Philadelphia he was known for the jazz club he owned, operated, and served as band leader for nearly 30 years. I started performing early, singing with my sister accompanying on piano around age 4. I began the clarinet in school band around age 13 and added saxophone during my freshman year in college in 1974. After graduation I went on the road with a show band named The Spurrlows for about 4 years, left the road and got a public school teaching job. I taught for about a year before returning to the road with a contemporary Christian group called TRUTH. After leaving, I returned home, got married, and eventually moved to Lynchburg Va to work with Dr. Jerry Falwell at Thomas Road Baptist Church and the Liberty Broadcasting Network
